Description: Specification of data formats and elements (known as "resources") and of an application programming interface (API) for exchanging electronic health records (EHR).
Additional information: FHIR is designed to support interoperability, the ability of different information systems, devices or applications to connect, in a coordinated manner, within and across organizational boundaries to access, exchange and cooperatively use data amongst stakeholders, with the goal of optimizing the health of individuals and populations. It provides software development resources and tools for administrative concepts such as patients, providers, organizations and devices, as well as a variety of clinical concepts including problems, medications, diagnostics, care plans and financial issues, among others. FHIR solutions are built from a set of modular components called 'Resources'. These resources can easily be assembled into working systems that solve real world clinical and administrative problems at a fraction of the price of existing alternatives.
Example: FHIR can be used in a variety of applications, such as mobile phone apps, cloud communications, EHR-based data sharing, server communication in large institutional healthcare providers, and much more. For instance, a mobile app could use FHIR to access lab results from an EHR system, or a cloud-based patient management system could use FHIR to exchange data with a hospital's in-house patient management system.
